Dominic Jones received his undergraduate degree in Applied Geology with Law in 1992 and worked as a Chartered Geologist in an environmental geological consultancy in England. He immigrated to Japan in 1999 and switched careers to English education.

 

After earning a Masters of Education in Applied Linguistics in 2006 he concentrated on teaching in tertiary education and became tenured at Sendai Seiyo Gakuin College in 2009. He is a professor in the Department of Contemporary English and his research areas include the martial science of self-defense and comprehension based language instruction.

 

He started learning the martial arts in 1989 with the British Kenpo Karate Union, under Bob Rose and Kevin Mills, until 2013 and earned a fourth degree black belt in Kenpo Karate. In 2004 he began his martial science study with Kevin Mills under Ron Chapél. Since 2010 he has been a first generation student of Ron Chapél and earned his third degree black belt in American Tactical Chuán-Fa in 2020.

 

He is particularly interested in the design of empowerment self-defense courses influenced by Ed Parker, Ed Parker II, Marc MacYoung, Rory Miller, Mellisa Soalt, Geoff Thompson, George Thompson, and Paul Howe.

 

He has presented at Japan Association for Language Teaching International Conferences and been a speaker for TEDx Tokyo Teachers and Ignite Sendai. He has taught martial arts since 1994, run his Sendai Kenpo club since 2000, and has taught martial science workshops in America, Asia, and Europe.
